Dr. Varun Raturi

Varun Raturi is a Research Fellow in Mobility Data Science in the School of Geography at the University of Leeds, contributing to the INFUZE project on sustainable urban transport. His research centres on the use of large-scale, non-traditional mobility datasets—such as mobile app data, GPS traces, and crowdsourced big data—to develop evidence-based insights into urban travel patterns, accessibility, and behavioural shifts.

Prior to joining Leeds, Varun was a Research Associate at the Urban Big Data Centre, University of Glasgow, where he led work on developing Origin-Destination matrices from mobile phone data, validating travel behaviour trends across UK cities, and evaluating transport interventions using app-based and sensor data. He previously worked at the Centre for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP) in India on mode choice modelling and demand forecasting for transport policy planning.

Varun holds a PhD in Transportation Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, where he applied game theory and discrete choice modelling to study competition between high-speed rail and conventional transport in India. His research integrates statistical modelling, spatial analysis, and transport policy to support equitable and sustainable mobility.
